What are you requirements?

List things like:

Do you need wifi?

Do you need NAS?

If you need wifi, do you need 5GHz and 2.4GHz or just 2.4GHz?

If you need wifi, how far would you like the signal to reach?

Do you have wired connection?

If you have wired connections, do you have more than 4?

What is the most you're willing to pay?

Do you want to flash custom firmware, or just use stock?

Are you and/or your dad pretty computer savvy or would rather have a plug-it-in-and-never-think-about-it-again setup?

Why buy a router at all? If you're up to a challenge, buy a raspberry pi for $30, buy 1 or 2 usb wireless cards, and buy a usb ethernet hub.

So some linux-foo and you have ~$100 amazing router.

How does this work? and can you send me a link so that I may try this myself :) ?

If you are new to networking concepts and terminal only navigation (no GUI), and you want a reliable and secure solution as a router I strongly suggest you to chose another solution. Though you can build this as a learning project I recommend you to buy a real router for your primary needs.

You can have a look to this tutorial that will show you how to configure your DHCP server, your host access point daemon and your NAT : http://raspberrypihq.com/how-to-turn-a-raspberry-pi-into-a-wifi-router/
