Wingless
Really? I pretty much have to agree with this point. I can think of dozens of events that are more important both to U.S history, and world history. I was in a middle school "technology" class, and they pretty much shut down classes for the rest of the day. There was a lot of hanging out and trying to wrap our heads around what just happened. A culture shock, if I do say so.

That was the fucking 8 billion a month we spent in on the "war" that was triggered by the attack on NYC. Not to mention all those people dying from both. Im friends with a man whos son got killed in iraq, shot in the head when he took his helmet off to pee. Horrible story...

We've been in two world wars, several police actions, an -actual- economic disaster. Prior to that, I seem to remember something about fighting the British for independence or something like that. Pearl Harbor resulted in 2,900 U.S casualties, followed by a long string of terrible battles for standing in the Japanese islands. We firebombed non-military cities and dropped nukes on two of their largest population centers. I'm not saying they wouldn't have done the same in return, but if you want to start talking about terrors of war, kick open a history book. You want to see wars that were poorly managed, look at the death tool in Vietnam. We didn't have to be there, the war was poorly run, and the American public knew it. I'm not saying it's not an important event, but saying it was the -most- important even is being selfish and short-sighted. I lost a friend 2 years ago in Iraq. He got hit with shrapnel in the back and neck. Took him hours to bleed out. There have also been roughly 100 THOUSAND civilian deaths recorded on in that theater. We lost 3000 in WTC. This is really just a matter of perspective. There is more to the world than the anger we felt that day, or following the first instinct that came to mind when it happened, and THAT is why we're still over there today. Someone didn't keep the event in perspective, and too bad for us, he happened to be the military''s commander in chief.

ttaM
I see what Wingless is saying but all of those events defined a generation, 9/11 defined and will continue to define ours. It will always be considered the most important event in the eyes of those that witnessed it. I woke up to my step-mom crying on the couch watching it on the TV. Her son was in New York that day flying over doing training missions(he's in the Air Force).

Her son was in New York that day flying over doing training missions(he's in the Air Force). Absolutely true. It impacts us most because it happened during out lifetimes. We'll never forget how we felt about it, however, we can't let that cloud our judgement and let some of our less appropriate moments in history repeat themselves. Children are our future and all. I suppose I'm thinking more along the lines of how society as a whole should be acting over personal feelings. 9/11 should be a day of remembrance, not hate. I'm still ashamed of the xenophobic mindset a lot of people fell into immediately after the planes hit. Fingers were being pointed at people that we knew and trusted and people were being murdered in the streets just because of what country it was assumed that they came from. WW1 - July 28, 1914 WW2 - September 1, 1939 9/11 - 8 years ago...that's why it impact us so much, it is a recent event, most of our generation was around to witness, and THAT is why it's so important still. What event in the last 10 years impacted us as hard as 9/11? Were you around for WW1 and WW2? No you weren't, quit trying to start shit. Who the fuck said it was the "most" important. This is pretty disrespectful of you. We don't need a history lesson.

Everything else you're stated in ad hominem has already been covered in the thread. I'm not being disrespectful, I'm asking that people remember to be objective and put things into perspective. We can't grow as a country without objectivity, and we still have troops that we need to pull out of the middle-east. Like I just said, 9/11 is supposed to be a day of remembrance, not hate.
