I find do heavy weight with about 3 - 6 reps is great for gaining strength. If you are looking to put on muscle I would recommend a 3 - 4 set and 10 -12 reps. Focus on the main 4 lifts, Bench Press, Squat, Deadlift and Overhead Press, then do accessory work to help the muscle groups involved in performing the lift.
