Drew Horton
Saw the new Godzilla film last night. It was really good. They waste no time getting to Godzilla, unlike the American versions that make you wait like a half hour before the King shows up. It begins almost immediately with Godzilla as a sort of proto-kaiju that can't yet walk, just crawling through the outskirts of Tokyo. As he advances forward, he evolves, gaining bipedalism and scaring the Japanese. After a bit of destruction he retreats to the sea. This film is much more reminiscent of the original 1954 Gojira than anything else. It focuses hard on the human characters and how they would deal with an issue like this. It explores the bureaucracy behind government and how long it takes to address a glaring issue, and obviously explores nuclear threat in a way only the Japanese can. It's heartbreaking to see them try to justify using a nuclear bomb on Godzilla, in the same country that was the only nation to ever be nuked. Godzilla himself is terrifying, although not at first. In his first evolved form he is kinda goofy looking as he crawls through the streets, his lidless eyes showing their whites, but when he comes back a few days later he's scary as hell. This is the tallest of any iteration of Godzilla, taller than the last American version by about 30 feet. The atomic breath is also notable and the scene where it first comes in is insane. The destruction Godzilla brings to Tokyo is just wild beyond belief. Definitely check it out if it's still playing near you. Keep in mind that it's 2 hours long and entirely in Japanese though, if that's a problem for you.
