HOW TO CONVERT .DEM FILES TO .AVI:

Requirements:

  • Any Source game
  • K-Lite Codec Pack

Why use this?

  1. It makes your files playable in major media players.
  2. It allows you to crop the action in-game.
  3. The audio is always perfectly synced.
  4. It captures at a higher FPS than FRAPS.

Instructions:

Step 1: Start in windowed mode.

OPTIONS -> Video -> Window (As opposed to full screen)

Step 2: Record a demo file, and capture the action you want to have.

Console:

record <demoname>

Wait for the action to be over and stop the demo.

Console:

stop

Step 3: Disconnect from the server and initiate the movie recording.

Console:

startmovie <moviename> avi

Step 4: When the pop up box appears, select the Xvid Codec (Unless you are using Vegas, then go with Microsoft).

Step 5: Play the demo, and set the following convars.

Console:

playdemo <demoname>
sv_cheats 1
host_framerate 30

Step 6: When the demo is over, stop the movie recording.

Console:

stopmovie

The .AVI file you recorded will be processed and can be found in the ROOT FOLDER of the game not the CONTENT DIRECTORY.

I.E. C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\<username>\<game name>

Notes:

You may start the demo, and then begin the movie later if the action doesnt occur until later, and you may also stop the movie before the demo ends.

The .DEM files can be found in the content directory of your game (Counter Strike: Source/cstrike) they can be deleted if you don't plan on using them for anything else.

Eh, you added every single command so an idiot could use this BUT you definetely should clarify that you are recording and completing a demo file before starting your movie recording since every other step is in there lol. Most people would probably figure it out but hey you never know. :P

u never added all the other stuff, this want get anyone anywhere :D

need to tell them how to record at the fps they want and that recording as avi's are bad. record with .tga's

what do you mean "This won't get anyone anywhere?" its every command I type in to make a demo into an avi, my vids come out decent quality, and it works every time.

Also, this is a tutorial specifically about avi's, becuase they are extremely common.

Yeah but then you have to use virtualdub, this always gets everything in sync and doesnt require any additional software other than K-Lite. I don't give a FUCK what the "pro's do" because this method is simple. This is my tutorial, not chrondog or BlackEyes's or whatever the hell you want to call your self. It's fine if you want to suggest things, but stop being an ass.
