Joe Williams, general manager of Microsoft's Genuine Windows group, stated in a Genuine Windows Blog post "In the coming days, we'll be deploying a new update for Windows Activation Technologies, the set of built-in activation and validation components built into Windows 7."

Williams goes on to explain "Called Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7, this update will detect more than 70 known and potentially dangerous activation exploits. Activation exploits are sometimes called "hacks", and attempt to bypass or compromise Windows' activation technologies. This new update is further evidence of Microsoft's commitment to keeping customers and partners secure."

Code:

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/189151/why_you_should_help_microsoft_thwart_windows_7_piracy.html

The update is being put out for manual download on 2/16/10 and will apply to automatic updates from 2/23/10.

The update code is: KB971033

1. Turn off automatic updates

2. Do not install said update at all

Thankfully it doesnt seem to be part of a larger more useful update..As long as you do not download this update you should be okay. You should also be able to update other releases as this will not be like the one in vista that required the update (famous kill switch in vista) to gain further updates and patches!

just thought i'd post this since im using a cracked OS as well

I wish I had a better computer that can run Windows7, but I'm stuck with a Acer and Vista Home.

You're now banned from all technology threads.

(Use 7 anyway, it runs cleaner than Vista 98% of the time)

But yeah, manual patching is where it's at. Or heisted site licenses, whatever is easier.

The site licensing policies have changed since XP. Now, you are given a certain amount of activations per key :(

RNG, yo. That and the fact they can't really hold you to that number because shit happens in the IT world and you need an activation returned to your pool.
