Hamhugger
I want to build this website. I know it will take a long time to get off the ground considering my only specialty at the moment is graphic design. I know very little coding. I took one class in college but stopped going because the teacher was boring as shit. I need to know which languages would suit me best to get this started. Everything will have to be specifically coded for this site because what I plan to do will be very intricate. Primarily there will be two groups of people who visit this site. Each will have their own purpose as far as why they are using it but both will have to be able to full interact with each other. Video will be a huge player in this too as well as other social networking sites. The description is very poorly written because the idea is still fresh but I guess what I am asking is what languages are a must know for a project like this. I figured id ask here because some of you are geniuses with what you with this website and such.
Wingless
Obviously, you're going to want a basic understanding of HTML since it's the backbone of webpages. w3schools has some pretty decent tutorials. You're probably going to be doing a lot of coding up front in something like Dreamweaver unless you're a masochist and want to do it by hand, but understanding what's going on is important. Past that, you're also going to want to have a basic understanding of javascript for some more complex functions, as well as PHP for working with databases and such. Just my .
Hamhugger
Thanks, Wingless. I've been to w3schools before years ago. It was a nice website and easy to follow along with. I'm sure it still is.

Guest The_Monkey
You're probably going to be doing a lot of coding up front in something like Dreamweaver unless you're a masochist and want to do it by hand, but understanding what's going on is important. He is going to have to be a masochist to do what he wants, if he wants it done right. Edited April 20, 2010 by The_Monkey

I never was much for lazy editors, but they have their uses. Detail pretty much always needs a hand touch.
Hamhugger
Should java script follow html once I have that down?

Guest The_Monkey
OK, this conversation is best left in words in order to properly gauge where you sit. Come into vent tomorrow and we'll talk about it.

Guest The_Monkey
...[t]hat, and time + motivation. BAM! I do this shit all day long at work that I don't normally like to think about at home. Then I always manage to rope myself into some script or website. I think I'm starting to hate the internet.

One benefit of being in an offshoot of the IT industry (even with VOIP being my old job plus my new one) is that nobody bothers to talk to me about Telecom. PRI? What the fuck is a PRI?
