Thoughts on Infinity Ward vs. Activision?

Well, it seems like Activision really pissed off not only their former employees (the heads of IW that were fired and the dozens that quit afterwords), but their current employees are also getting screwed a big one and want it to stop.

...a collection of 38 past and present employees calling itself the Infinity Ward Employee Group has other ideas: It has filed a lawsuit against Activision claiming between $75 million and $125 million in compensation, a figure which includes various unpaid bonuses from Modern Warfare 2, lost value on "restricted stock units," money owed for "sister games" including the in-progress Modern Warfare 3, interest on all of it and more. And that's not all: The suit also seeks another $75 to $500 million in punitive damages, a number based on the huge revenues generated by Modern Warfare 2 and "Activision's net worth."

I read it and honestly I think that Activision has completely screwed themselves out of a "once" talented studio full of very skillful game designers. A bunch of penny-pinching arseholes they are. As far as the IW head's lawsuit goes, I kind of believe them on what they claim over Activision, however the thing about the 38 past/current employees is a clear cut case of bending employees over, pulling their pants down, and giving them the big shaft.

But, push comes to shove it looks like Modern Warfare 3 will not be completed by IW and will either end up in limbo or pushed onto some shit company that will do more harm than good.

Best thoughts on matter:

Activision shouldn't have fired the heads of Infinity Ward, but IW employees should sue the pants off Activision. at least not too much.

Seriously, IW ruined itself when it released MW2 on the PC with the same matching system as the Xbox and PS3. Now COD:4 Modern Warfare was an amazing game! Yes, MW2 is a good game, but they completely messed it up when they did the matching system like they did. The coding for dedicated servers is there in the game, IW was just stupid enough to not activate it.

It's two-sided for me.

On one hand Activision has been a bunch of raging asshats for as long as I've been alive and I can't really take their side on ANYTHING, let alone something they're probably wrong about.

On the other hand, IW really dropped the ball this last game. I don't know if they had outside pressure or not, but they made a lot of very poor choices in implementation. The QA was also bad, but I don't know if the blame should be with them for that.

I think that Activision will end up screwing themselfs out of IW, and IW is gonna do just fine.

IW is done for, at least in comparison to their former selves. They've lost at least 9 employees so far since the firing and a good number look like they're going to seek employment with Respawn. It's difficult to continue to produce when your creative leadership is hemorrhaging. No management for oversight = no game.

Apparently Activision isn't going to be caring that much that they're losing the multi-billion dollar company of Infinity Ward,....

....and that's because they've partnered with Bungie, another multi-billion dollar FPS company.

So they're like, "Eh, we can afford to lose them because we're getting those other guys to work on a new project for us instead."

It works as a rough theory, but if Respawn is in a partnership with EA or another major player, it's still really bad for business.

It's of my personal opinion that EA is the Antichrist, and I've only purchased one game published by them in the last 7 years for personal use, but they're still big in the business, and a force to be reckoned with for market share.
