fdh
Hey guys, I was hoping ya'll would be able to help me out with my current dilemma. I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima with ~128k. A few weeks ago, the car wouldn't start so we put in a new battery and alternator. While it was being worked on, my dad suggested we go ahead and replace the belt. Well after that the car has started to make a horrible screeching sound, especially on the first startup of the day! We called the mechanic and they said they would tighten it, which they did to no avail. Then they ordered a Nissa factory belt and installed it yesterday. The screeching was back again this morning. I'm going to test and see if its the A/C belt since that seems to be a common suggestion online. So here are some specifics: -Car screeches on startup -Car screeches when I've had my foot off the gas pedal and apply some pressure to accelerate -Car likes to screech in turns where I accelerate -Car screeches Any insight would be awesome! *UPDATE* When A/C or Heat is turned on it screeches on initial startup (when the engine is cold). When A/C and/or Heat is turned off its fine. Edited March 5, 2009 by fdh

vandium
There is a squealing noise coming from the engine whenever you increase the speed of the engine. By opening the hood, you find the noise is coming from the alternator. The alternator seems to be fine as the battery stays charged and the charging warning light doesn't come on. The problem seems to occur more regularly. The probable causes are: 1. Loose or damaged alternator drive belt. 2. The alternator's internal bearings are worn. 3. The alternator's drive pulley is loose or damaged. http://www.fd3s.net/belt_noise.html Use the internet, thats why its there you motherfucker! vandium
Maybe you can goto an auto place (autozone, etc) and buy some "Belt Dressing". Its a spray that you spray on the belt to get an old belt to stop squeeling. You might be able to do this until the belt gets some wear. Then you shouldn't have to use it anymore. You said they already tightened the belt? Make sure its aligned properly too. Try the belt spray and give it a day or two. Chicks dig it when your car squeels coming from a stop or starting your car. CantBeFaded
a simple bar of soap against the inside of the belt while the engine is running will do the same job as belt dressing just dont get yer hoo hoo caught in the fan blade
fdh
I tried to pee on it while the engine was running. I hit that big battery thing though. I got my hoo hoo all bandaged and burnt.
J3TTA
could be a number of things belts, tensioner bearing or idler bearing
DJ2
could be a number of things belts, tensioner bearing or idler bearing see... J3TTA IS smart! I am guessing with a new alternator and belt that you did not get it tensioned enough, however the idler and tensioner bearings will make a squealing noise as J3TTA said

stanger
spray belt dressing on the belt if the noise goes away by new belts, if the noise doesn't go away check idler pulleys bearing and/or tensioner bearing. The way to check those are to put a flat head screwdriver on the side bolt that holds the pulley on and the other side to your ear and if it sounds loud go from there. Also check the alternator the same way but put it to the case of the alternator to check for bearing noise. or you can get a tool from tool store that is specially designed for listening to noises in hard to reach areas. I cant spell it but it looks like what a doctor has but at the end it has a metal rod for listening. Cant remember what it is called. It could also be belt alignment too if the pulley arent lined up probably and its rubbing the side of the belt.

fdh
its gotta be the flux capacitor I went out and built a new one. Now I'm cruising in 1991. And UPDATE: It seems to be fixed now, tightening the belt as far as it will go w/o overtightening and me yanking on it some under the car No screeching for a while now, even this morning. If it starts again I'll let ya'll know. Thank you for the help
