Weeman
i certainly hope you don't plan on teaching yourself, that is beyond difficult. i strongly recommend getting lessons to learn the basics, if only them. My friend taught himself guitar and he said it was the hardest thing he ever did (well other then passing calculus) but now he can play a double neck without trouble. adomorn
get drunk and play 8 hours a day. this is the secret to success. i used to play until i couldn't keep my eyes open. i don't know shit about reading music or chords, though. i just play what sounds good, and i can typically hear a song and then duplicate it. I'm self-taught and with the internet and a basic understanding of music theory, it wasn't so bad. Lessons aren't a bad idea if you can afford them, though. If you're going to try to learn something on your own, like I said, the internet is an outstanding source of tutorials. You'll want to cover the basics of theory before you do much of anything (the fact that it's tuned in fifths, what the bridge does, what pickups do, what a trem does, what hammer, pull and vibrato are and the different types of picking) After that, basic scales are good to know, as well as common chords. Some of the acoustic work by Metallica is a good thing to drive to. Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters comes to mind. You can pick up tablature from the interbutts. Some other rhythmically simple songs are Wherever I May Roam and Enter Sandman. Just some random ideas to point you in the right direction. thatswhatshesaid!
Just some random ideas to point you in the right direction. the whole serenading part is a joke but i guess it's a plus. i'm a fast learner and i usually do better if i teach myself, but the many websites on helping is good too. (guitar hero/rock band only go so far as in skill.) i go to freeandeasyguitar.com which has a beginners section and a couple songs so i'll learn from there. i guess i'll keep you guys updated and tell you how many chicks i attract. (0) Eh. Musical video games really just serve to piss off actual musicians. About the only similarities they have with actual instruments is that they're played with your hands and sometimes follow the rhythm. Unless there's booze, I loathe Rock Band. actually people play better on guitar high or drunk. proven Fact. ex. thats how many people like kiss or the rolling stone got started. Also, citation needed. Drugs can help with the creative flow, but there is also a physical cost. Edited June 25, 2010 by Wingless
Dr.jiggles
You could try learning guitar at school if your still in it and they will teach you, looking for after school courses, looking for someone in your family/friends that know how to play, and/or if you just want to play songs go on youtube and they'll teach you how to play songs.
