Why hate Macs?

I was talking to a couple of friends and I brought up I had Steam and Steam games for the Mac. They started laughing and said that it sucks for me. I asked them for a reason for the bashing on Macs; but they just changed the subject. I was thinking why do people hate the Macs so much? I used to hate them but I grown too see that Macs aren't comparable to PCs. it would be "comparing an apple to orange" (no pun intended on the apple lol). I like them both but they each have their own characteristics. So what do you people think of Macs? LOL @ :apple:

Very expensive paperweight or if your in a pinch, a doorstop.

QFT, IMO you can easily find a PC with better specs than a mac of the same price. and if you so choose you can get good software that'll essentially make it do the same thing. I have no problem with mac users, its just that i myself have never used one myself and I personally find them too expensive to be worth the while.

I'd like Apple if they didn't have to make commercials hating on PC's.

Uhh, the OS is unimaginably awesome. But, thats the only thing i can see with Macs that is a good marketing reference. They're overpriced, not as customizable as PC's, and they cant really play games at super high graphics like PC's can.

At the most basic level, you have two companies that are putting out two OSes (we're ignoring *nix derivatives for this exercise).

Microsoft markets a business friendly, customizable, scalable, comparably inexpensive OS.

Apple markets an easy to use, secure, walled garden, which is also supposed to be a status symbol. As with most status symbols, you end up paying a lot more than it's actually worth, regardless of the fact that it's using Intel parts.

Now, I'm sure you're well aware that marketing isn't always accurate. We're all pretty much aware of the shortcomings of Windows, so I'm not going to spend much time harping on it. We're also aware that both of these operating systems... borrow heavily from other sources.

OSX runs off of a modified BSD kernel, which can be credited for a good amount of the OSes stability at the base level. This isn't something magical that Apple invented, it was existing technology that they, and everyone else on the planet, is allowed to modify for their own devices. They have their own (I believe) abstraction layers and UI, which I've heard does have some stability issues. Crash differently, I suppose.

Apple also claims that their OS is secure, which is far from the truth. As of a few months ago, the built in anti-malware software failed a rootkit battery miserably. The reason why you don't here much about security exploits on Apple devices is because they make up a minority of the market. Security by obscurity is no security at all, yet they're still leading their consumers to believe that they need to take no further steps to make sure their data stays safe.

I'd go on a little further, but I'm starting to get loopy from the happy pills, so I'll just sum it up with a pretty bow - Apple markets this sense of smugness that appeals best to artists and people that don't understand computes in a practical, 8th grade class sense. They've pretty much created a cult that supports their products regardless of how many bold-faced lies they tell. Now, Microsoft isn't innocent by any stretch of the imagination, but these reasons are why I will never purchase an Apple product and continue to use Windows and Linux as my primary OSes.

Now, don't get me wrong, both OSes have areas where they excel, and it all comes down to personal choice and comfort level, but you need to have an understanding if what exactly it is that you're buying or you turn into a zealot with no factual basis to hold his/her beliefs on.

When did this become Windows Vs OSX? I am pretty sure its about why people hate MAC's as opposed to PC's.

The main reason why I hate them is because of the douches who bring them to coffee shops and pretend they're intelligent and trendy, when their actually pretty retarded for buying multiple $5.00 over-roasted frappalappachinos (or whatever it is that they drink) A DAY (which adds up to like $240.00 a month, $3000.00 a year), and becoming uber-tools in the process.

I am just pointing out that the assumption that in a debate between PC's and Mac's simply boils down to OS's is incorrect.

It's not a Mac vs PC debate. The post was a short comparison to explain some of Apple's major shortcomings as a company and why they are more damning than Microsoft's problems in a lot of ways. I also never said that the only thing to compare when thinking about the two flavors of computer is the OS, especially considering that I took the time to talk about the companies themselves to make a point, which involved more than the OSes themselves.

Moot point is moot?

^^^ - Awesome lol

My main hate for macs is the user stupidity and their false sense of security. "I've got a MAC, I'm virus free and secure."

MACS serve their purpose, I think they are great for college kids as I'm betting they have a lot less issues then they would with a PC. MACS are good for photo/video/music editing. PC's are easier to screw up it seems. User error ;)

I can't agree with you more. Apple sells that they are "User friendly". When I got mine, I was so confused and was constantly asking questions and Googling questions. Also, I looked at the "System Preference" for my Mac and saw that the Firewall was turn offed as a stock setting! The bluetooth was always and was visible to anyone. Yes the pricing is horrid but it worth it for a person creating/ editing videos. I just use mine for school and now TF2.

That's not... entirely accurate, but in the sense that most PC games are engineered first for Windows and last for other non-console platforms, I suppose so.

Maybe if it read "PC's are better gaming computers than Macs of similar price" it would be correct?

I think PC's are totally better gaming computers than Macs, but Macs are a lot easier to use for photo editing/workflow.
