As for software there are a lot of different tools that you'll need. I'll post the majority of what I use later, but you must have a USB flash drive with some copy of Linux (Knoppix or Ubuntu (my choices)) because there will be a time when you will be unable to boot into Windows and you will have to recover files! I think it is called RJ45 crimper. Of course, you better check with your IT instructor before you buy.... in case you have to buy something specific for your course.
