Knives Posted November 27, 2010 Share Posted November 27, 2010 Every time i try to load up any type of dedicated server list, my internet crashes. Happens almost every time. I have run Malwarebytes and several boot-time scans through avast, and it comes up empty (well now it does) anybody have any suggestions? nightshade Posted November 30, 2010 Share Posted November 30, 2010 Are you using a router as well? What internet connection, DSL cable, wireless, cellular, satelite? If you do have a router try running your pc direct to the modem/bridge. Some routers are not able to handle the inrush of data during a server list update. At one point in time when I was on DSL my modem would crash as well. YOu may also try running a ping while you are attempting to get a server list. If you are on XP got to: Start --> Programs --> Accesseries --> Command Propmt Vista or Windows 7 just type command in the search after clicking on the start button. Type in ping http://www.google.com -t and press enter. Open another command prompt along side the first one and if you are behind a router find what your router's IP address is, this is commonly 192.168.0.1 Start another ping it will look like this ping 192.168.0.1 -t Then start your game client and update your servers list. When the connection goes down take a look at your ping it will give you a good guess of when the connection goes down and will also let you know if it is your actual internet connection or the game program/computer. Look at your pings, if your ping to google shows "destination host unreachable" but your ping to your router is good then your modem/bridge is crashing, if both stop responding then your router is crashing. A ping that is successful will look like this: C:\Users\NightShade>ping http://www.google.com Pinging http://www.l.google.com [74.125.227.19] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 74.125.227.19: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=55 Reply from 74.125.227.19: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=56 Reply from 74.125.227.19: bytes=32 time=36ms TTL=56 Reply from 74.125.227.19: bytes=32 time=36ms TTL=56 Ping statistics for 74.125.227.19: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 26ms, Maximum = 108ms, Average = 51ms C:\Users\NightShade> You may also get something like "Request timed out." in the list, all internet connections will have this happen from time to time if there are a bunch it may show line quality issues or a device that is getting overloaded and unable to process what is happening. If you think that your router may be causing the issue your options are to get a new router or build one. If you use wireless then you can even keep your old router and just turn the DHCP server off and use it as an access point. If you have an old computer and a couple Ethernet cards a router can be put together easily, a working computer around 500 mhz with 128 mb or ram and a 500 mb HDD or better is about all it takes and will not have the problems of crashing, http://m0n0.ch/wall/ or http://www.smoothwall.org/ are some good starting points if you do want to make your own. Ohhh that makes alot of sense it could be an overflow in your router from alot of information coming through try downloading a different file and tell me if that makes it crash. If it does then you should call your internet provider because this looks like a virus that your virus software isn't able to find since your virus software only looks around in your computer not your router/modem.
