That is one of the eye-grabbing revelations contained in the latest batch of sensitive documents released by Wikileaks. The U.S. apparently wanted its diplomats to go way beyond gathering basic information of governments. A directive released to embassies, including Ottawa, in the summer of 2009 asked U-S officials to pass along credit card account numbers, frequent flyer numbers, work schedules, and internet and intranet handles. It's not clear how the requests for sensitive information could impact the relationship between the North American neighbours. Other than that, Canada was not mentioned much in the first batch. But will likely be included in the second, to be released this week. University of Toronto political scientist Nelson Wiseman is already predicting how Canada will be portrayed. He's anticipating the standard stereotypes of Canadians' sense of inferiority and self-deprecation. Other startling revelations released Sunday include a request from Saudi Arabia that could escalate Mid-east tensions. It wanted the U.S. to bomb Iran to "cut off the head of the snake while still possible." Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon is one of the world leaders condemning Wikileaks, saying the website is putting lives at risk.
