You can do a lot with just about anything, probably most people are using Photoshop/Fireworks but plenty probably use GIMP or an online program such as paint.net. You did a good job for the size of the signature and colors, and overall it is a good standard signature, but it is lacking the lighting and definition in key elements (such as characters or text) that would give it a real powerful feel. I'd suggest checking out tutorials on lighting and smudging to help it out. (Also don't base anything on my recent work, I am not very good but I can help out).
