LaMigra
this comes up after i log in to windows either that comes up or the screen just goes black.... Of course my first guess is the video card (ATI 5870) but my cpu has been giving me some trouble lately (AMD Phenom 9600 Black Edition 2.31 GHz Quad Core) any ideas/any help would be appreciated
Kirk
Take out your video card and plug your monitor into the MB?
Cefdinir
Did you try safe mode? (Spam F8 went you are loading you operating system) If you can get into safe mode, it is probably your video drivers. Reinstalling could fix it.

Cefdinir
Sweet!!! You won't be able to use the ATI installer in safe mode but you will be able to uninstall it in safe mode using device manager. -to get device manager up hit Windows Key + R and type in devmgmt.msc then press Enter. -Open up the "Display" tree and right click the video card (HD 5000 series it should say). -Click Uninstall and check the box if it has one in the prompt. -Reboot This should allow you to get in normal windows mode. (don't hit F8) Your icons and such may look big, no worries. -Uninstall ATI Catalyst software suite in Add/Remove Programs through Control Panel. -Download the lastest catalyst suite for you OS off of http://game.amd.com -Install these and reboot again. -Give Cef 100 pesos. <3 Edited March 2, 2011 by Cefdinir

Cefdinir
You could try an older Catalyst suite (http://filehippo.com) such as 10.9 or maybe even 10.10. if it is not that it might be your video card.

I have the same card as you and I have not updated to 11.2 yet, i am still running 10.11. Older drivers tend to be more stable. http://www.afterdawn.com/software/security/system_cleanup/driver_cleaner_pro.cfmtry cleaning out your drivers, I know sometimes Windows will leave stuff behind in the Registry and in the installation DIR then try reinstalling your drivers... We use this tool at work a lot in combo with Ccleaner, but I use at a last resort. sometimes it tends to delete registry values that are needed and when you goto install the fresh driver you get an INF file not found error. It's possible but most video card manufacturers are keen on keeping the Hardware IDs up to date with AMD... hmm... strange... personally, I've owned the HD3XXX, HD4XXXX, HD5XXXX (and now a HD6870...); they were of all different brands, and I have had never this problem. He can always work with his OEM's drivers instead of the ATI standard ones as they usually contain the correct (or more relevant) hardware IDs (found in the INI)... It is a good tool and I haven't run into any issues with it outside of work. Although, at work we are constantly switching out hardware--mainly GPUs of all generations, types and brands--that maybe a factor as well. Hopefully LaMigra has it down, don't want to get too off topic.

enigma#
Migra, it's a long shot but can you try: Solution: 1. Open Device Manager 2. Under Sound Controllers, determine which device is your sound card 3. Disable other/unknown sound controller devices 4. Reboot 5. Test for Stability X_x not sure if it has to do anything with it but apparently, people have had success with this. I also read somewhere in the forums (in the links) that a Windows 7 patch may have broken it... but something tells me otherwise... Edit: found another one going googling http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/284207-33-5850-grey-screen Thanks bystander, Turned out re-seating the graphic card (and dusting it with compress air) did the trick. Thanks a bunch.

LaMigra
when re-seating should i just place it back on the same pcie or should i try another one.... i know the top one usually is the main one but i do have a second 16x slot
Cefdinir
It'll eliminate a variable if you use the second slot, worth a try.
