Wabbit Posted March 22, 2011 Share Posted March 22, 2011 O well, i was waiting to get the 590Nvida new top card but there was a leak today and here it is. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Nvidia-GeFoce-GTX-590-Gets-Listed-by-Online-Retailer-190515.shtml These seem to confirm the previous rumors that hit the Web as the card is powered by two fully enabled GF110 cores that packs no less than 1024 CUDA processors, 128 texturing units, 96 ROP units as well as dual 384-bit memory buses. Each one of these will be connected to 1.5GB of video buffer. Given the high power consumption of the GPUs, Nvidia was forced to downclock the GF110 cores used inside the GTX 590, so these will run at 612MHz while the GDDR5 memory runs at 855MHz (3420MHz effective). To handle all the heat generated while in operation, the cooling system uses a special design that splits the graphics card into two distinct areas, each housing a GF110 GPU with the help of a centrally positioned fan. This provides enough airflow to cool the two separate vapor chambers that sit on top of the GPUs as well as the 10-phase power supply. According to VR-Zone, the GTX 590 measures 11 inches in length and is 4.5 inch thick, and the card has a power consumption of 375W. Other features include 3D Surround support and no less than three DVI ports, one HDMI and one mini-DisplayPort video outputs. The Asus ENGTX590, which by now was removed from the website, has been listed at CA$799, making it $100 more expensive than the Radeon HD 6990. Went from a 9800GTX+ to a HD 6950, I'm very happy I switched, I feel better branching out and trying a new product. So don't be afraid to try new things, because variety is the spice of life right? I could flash the bios to unlock the rest of the chip to essentially make it a 6970 I guess, but I think it's fine as-is, and don't wanna void the warranty as I have been known to take full advantage of the warranties. Could never afford something in the $600+ top tier range anytime soon, but i'm definitely future proof for a good while. And that seems like a lot of power for a card to use, that 590 must get hot. The HD 6970 was neck and neck with the GTX 570 in most games in 1080p but I plan on going Eyefinity here pretty soon, 570 doesn't support 3 monitors. That is slightly over 20% slower for the core, and memory drops by almost 15%, 855MHz vs 1002 on the 580. Luckily, no shaders were fused off, so it looks to be a complete 512 * 2/1024 shader card. the official numbers show the GTX590 beating a HD6990, even in higher performance mode, by a hair. The benchmarks in the slides linked above, have one really curious problem however, they are are painfully low resolution. This is not by accident. By painfully low resolution, how does 1280*720 with no AA/AF sound on a card like this? How about not a single test of the 11 tests listed going above 1920*1200? Two of the tests are at 1280*1024/720, and the rest are all at 1920*1200/1080. Why is this a big deal? Easy, a single GTX580 or HD6970 is more than powerful enough to drive any single 2MP (1920*1200) class screen at playable frame rates, and a dual card is more than enough to spit out frames faster than a 60Hz panel can show them. This is the long way of saying that both the GTX590 and HD6990 are a total waste of money on 2MP screens. You need multiple 2MP screens, 3D/120Hz, or a 4MP (2560*1600) panel before there is anything close to a difference between these two cards, or a dual card vs the single GPU variant. Realistically, if you are not using a 2560 or 3 1920 panels, stick with a single GPU, you won’t really miss a thing. ATI cards tend to gain performance relative to their Nvidia counterparts as resolution increases, which is why Nvidia is desperately trying to show benchmarks in as low a rez as they can get away with. Should they show the same tests on the same system in on a a 2560/4MP panel, it is doubtful that they would win a single test. Three 2MP panels are worse for the green team, and lets not talk about three 4MP panels, much less 5 or 6, not that they have the capability. In the end, Nvidia is hammered by heat, the GF100 base arc is broken and there is nothing the company can do to change that. Arguing with the laws of physics, no matter how much you scream and flecks of spit fly from your mouth, is ultimately fruitless. 6990 for me, been with Nvidia 8 years, now is time for ATI Nvidia does not seem to understand this, and the architectures they are floating for Kepler and Maxwell are aiming in the wrong direction. Until the company does a 180 degree turn, they are lost in graphics. The GTX590 is a shining example of this, it runs headlong in to the power wall with a dull thud. I'm still a little flabbergasted as to why NVIDIA clocked the card as low as they did. Likely they are ying-yang with the fact that this card performance roughly equal slash close to R6990 performance and simply opted for low noise and a fashionable power consumption. But in this cutthroat business, yeah, I expected NVIDIA to give the R6990 a run for it's money. That is certainly is not the case, especially when you would enable the unlocked mode on the R6990. In all fairness,i think that ATI still applies a trislope optimization giving them a small perf advantage over NVIDIA's defaulted image quality. Regardless of that yeah, this conclusion is hard. i tell you this though, the GTX 590 is downright silent for a multi-GPU product, and believe it or not -- something that simple could very well be the decisive factor for many of you.
