The bot problem has become progressively worse over the past year, with bot makers countering every change developers made to stop their bots from working. This week developer Jagex celebrated bot-nuking day as it deployed a massive update designed to permanently stop all of the popular reflection and injection bots from working.... The first weapon was yesterday's "Bot-Nuking Day," in which a patch was released that was supposed to deal with 98% of the botting in the game. The second is an official email sent to suspected botters threatening them with a class-action lawsuit if they don't desist. In the email, Jagex calls out the suspected behavior and offers the player a "one-time amnesty lifeline" to shape up. These players will be placed on a watch list and will be monitored for any further botting action. If the player persists in cheating, then Jagex promises to not only remove their account permanently but to include the player in a mass lawsuit. "If you ignore our offer and instead continue use botting software, we reserve our rights to pursue statutory damages against you for between $200 to $2,500 per act of past, present, and/or future botting," the letter states. I just did a quick read as far as my english knowledge reaches, what I have understood from that, is RS themselves have not violated any laws, but information was wrongfully given to them by people that did not know( or knew, but didn't care) about the agreement between the lawyers of this website and paypal ? Knowing how sensitive this information is, and how much we care about our customers, our lawyers immediately responded to this subpoena to question their intentions. Their lawyers specifically made it clear that this information would not be shown to any Jagex employees. To ensure this, we filed a protective order on the information with the courts to make it illegal for their lawyers to show any of the information to Jagex employees. Later this summer, Jagex illegally circumvented the protective order. To dupe the courts, Jagex filed a separate suit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California (Jagex Limited vs. John Does). The courts in the State of California did not know about the protective order, and granted Jagex's lawyers access to the PayPal information again with another subpoena for that case. Of course, this time, there was no protective order. This is a mockery of the U.S. legal system. so apparantly after i reread it, lawyers on the botting side made it illegal for the lawyers for jagex to release paypal information to jagex employees. later, jagex filed a separate suit in a different court which didnt know about the protection of the paypal information, therefore granting jagex employees access to the information. imo, that was pretty "illegal" of jagex. I dont know anythin bout law other than its bad to just go round knifing people:P so whether illegal and immoral are different offences in the court of law i dont know but i wouldnt say its illegal what Jagex have done. They have got a court to let them release the details to the employees. Its the US's law (or communication between courts) that has failed this time i would say. I'd even say it's quite smart from Jagex to try that, seeing it worked and all those botters got pwnd :3. But anyways, a lot of regular players believe that Jagex's claims to remove all botting and ban all accounts is a bunch of bullshit The reason this large anti-botting update came around is because Jagex had their Golden Joystick award for best free MMO revoked recently due to the problem of botting They have updated their game to use new code and such, but the bot developers can easily decode all of this in about a month But there is also speculation that bot makers are lying about their progress just to bring in money So either botting has been completely eradicated from the game, or it will be back shortly!
