Alichino
So I just recently (Wednesday night) got out of the psych hospital yet again. It was my second time to be in there. My first time was in January and I stayed for a week. This time I stayed for a total of 16 days. I hated pretty much every second of it and they put me on so many different combinations of medications its unreal. But my diagnosis as of today is Treatment Resistant Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar II Disorder. I'm on 5 different psychotropic drugs at the current moment and one of them makes me act drunk. Seriously. I slur my words and I can't walk straight or drive for the time being. So I'm stuck at home with nothing to do but troll forums. I don't even know if anyone would really care to read all of this except the few people in the clan that know me well. Regardless if anyone has ever had any questions about psych hospitals or treatment in general I'm open to answering questions. -Ali

Jella
I've only experienced psych wards from the nursing side of things, so I can't imagine what it must feel like to be an inpatient. I hope you stop feeling drunk from that med

Weeman
Psych Hospitals are one of many systems that need a rework, like you stated their solution seems to be just to drug the living hell out of their patients instead of dealing with the issue at hand. Two hospitals by me were closed down due to patient abuse, sexual harassment, and "mercy killings" so I guess we should be glad that atleast they arent just killing people outright. Letchworth "Insane" Asylum is a place only about 7 miles away from where I live that did such things. [video=youtube;_gYmPmgq_UA]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gYmPmgq_UA Check out the other videos these guys did on Letchworth, they're really well done. I've actually been in the remnants of these buildings and housing units and its scary as hell, there are still blood stains and there is a whole tunnel system underneath the main complexes that the patients were forced to build. Alichino
The drunkness isn't fun in the way that I feel no effect from it only other people notice that I'm slurring my words. I do stumble around, my balance is horrid and all that nonsense though.

ttaM
Because you wanted questions... When did you first experience symptoms? Was your first episode the one that put you in the psych hospital in January? Lastly, what is your current career path? I watched a documentary on Stephen Fry where he claimed that those with Bipolarity could inch towards Hollywood, as it somewhat compliments their lifestyle. Alichino
I don't remember when I first started feeling symptoms all I know is that I knew something was off at the age of 10 so I tried to kill myself and almost succeeded if it wasn't for the hospital visit that night. The episode that lead to me being hospitalized in january was the fact that not only do I have severe treatment resistant depression but I was coming off effexor, which is a hell of a drug. It sent me into all kinds of mood cycles. My current career path is that of a chemist/pharmacist. I have no desire whatsoever to do anything with hollywood. It's always fascinating to me how different people respond to different things, especially in your case of effexor, which was very helpful to me and others I know. Have you been confronted and/or addressed with your condition as it relates to your career? It's possible you will be "dependent"(used loosely, not intended to have a negative connotation) on types of medication for the foreseeable future, does that concern you or do you think it would concern a would be employer? Bob the Android Penguin
Chemist/Pharmacist? Science/Medicine field? Bob approves! Fuck the psych ward, do science!
Alichino
Well I hope it wouldn't concern a would be employer. As I've been on the other side and I want to be the most helpful pharmacist I can be and do psychiatric pharmaceutical research. If all that fails I have my minor in psychology to fall back on and maybe be a psychiatrist or a psychologist.

Alichino
The most frustrating thing I have to deal with right now is my inability to drive. I'm stuck at home 24 hours a day pretty much (My parents work all day) and all my friends are away at college. So I try to find little ways of entertaining myself but its very VERY hard. Especially if I'm in a hypomanic episode.
r3dm0nd
I do hope things get better and work out for you. Stories like yours make me hate the way our medical system is like if they don't have a cure they either try and drug people or just pass them on it is really sad. Bob the Android Penguin
I would recommend revising your backup plan, psychology is a great field, but you have to have a Masters, Psy.D, or a Ph.D to get psychology related jobs. Once you have a least a masters in psychology then you can rake in the money. Source: Sister is majoring in Psychology. Great plan altogether imo. Life's hard on you now, but we HG internet heroes got your back.
60Seconds
Like Bob said. I had friends at Yale who went for psychology majors and now work at adult daycare centers.
