D3nL
Poorly organized opinionated rambling ahoy! Mercenary (left) vs Greed (top)

.5 1 1.5 2

8 160 80 53.3 40

16 320 160 106.6 80

24 480 240 160 120

(Mercenary gold gained/greed gold gained)x10 seconds Point for point (excluding the missing rank 4 of mercenary for comparison), Mercenary will grant the same amount of gold as Greed if you get a kill or assist every 2 minutes at 40 seconds. At the 41:30 mark, 15 kills+assists will put you even with greed. (greed doesn't start until 1:30) Being below 15 kills+assists will put you below the gold gain of greed, while being above 15 kills+assists will put you above greed's gold gain. What it means: I don't really have the numbers for the amount of kills+assists the average person playing defense masteries is, but I imagine (from my experience) that the average is probably below 15 kills+assists at 41~ minutes, unless you are actively ganking or there are a large amount of team fights. While mercenary has a worse case/better case, the better case will end up being supplemented with extra gold from the kill or assist anyway. Worst case: no to low kills+assists Mercenary gives little to no benefit compared to greed. Good case: Frequent team fights that are about even Mercenary gives gold that may actually be useful/meaningful Best case: Enemy team feeds Mercenary will make your snowball slightly stronger. Taking all that in to account, it's important to remember that Mercenary is in defense(tier 5) and Greed is in utility(tier 3). Due to Mercenary's high tier, it's mostly restricted to tanky dps/junglers. Tanky dps are almost always soloing top right now, which means less potential kills+assists before mid game team fights. Therefore, this mastery is more suited/reliable for junglers who plan on ganking a lot. Greed's higher point cost has moved it into being more support only. Factoring in the higher point cost of swiftness, greed will probably never see the light of day in any x/x/9 builds. tl;drGreed and Mercenary both hit their target audience in about the same amount, point for point. Greed is stable. Best suited for supports with no creep kills. Has no counter. Mercenary is a gamble. Better suited for junglers/gankers/roamers. Shut down by enemy playing defensively.
