diK
Ok, so I was playing Fallout 3 last night and there is a quest in the game that gives you the ability to be a little kid called the "pint sized slasher" and you objective is to murder everyone in the neighborhood with a knife. It was a good time but I remember back when MW2 came out and you had the option to remove the level where you go around shooting people in an airport because it was too controversial. Help me understand why that was any worse then playing as a young adult slicing off limbs of your neighbors.
Awwik
The level in mw2 is purely about killing thousands of civilians. That's why it was an option to disable it. IMO it wasn't even necessary for that level to be there, they did it for the controversies that followed.
diK
Well they needed a reason for Russia to go to war with the US so I can see why they had to have something tragic to happen in order for them to declare war. In that regard though, I can think of a couple of things right now that could cause that without having the need to kill a ton of people so I see your point. They did make the point though that in order to save the US from complete destruction then the operative had to go through with the mission to kill the civilians. In the quest I did in fallout 3 it was literally because some little girl told me to do it.
fox in a box
There was controversy in the level because that's what activision wanted. They wanted to make this deep scene where people would get offended and crap but lets be honest: if you really need a prompt like that in MW2, a game where half the players will just skip the god damn single player experience and go to multiplayer, why doesn't gta have some sort of prompt? you play gta 4 and you brutally kill people on the streets just for the hell of it. fallout 3 gives you the quest because its something you are going to take a double look at and crack up because you are going to read it and be like "Ok kill all of the children.... Wait, WHAT?" They did it in MW2 because they wanted to drive sales by making the game look like its deep and theres a greater experience to playing the game, just because you have to go through an airport and kill civilians, just so you can get dirt on a terrorist leader. and on top of that, they released the information that there was a mission like this when selling the game, along with the fact that you can skip it, just so people would be excited for that mission in particular. FDR
I've never done the Pint Sized slasher quest mission in Fallout 3 because I always have a good player and want to get out of Tranquility Lane as fast as possible. As for the MW2 mission, I didn't fire a bullet at the civilians but did fire a grenade at the riot soldiers, but that's it. Video Games, like all forms of media, will get hit with controversies about violence and how it affects people. It's just a small part of the gaming industry. Cal45
If you've ever wondered about the affects of violent video games on children, read Lt. Col Grossman's book On Combat.

I'm sure you're not the only one to have a sense of awareness in this issue. Most of the time why game developers write in instances of terror/violence to this degree is sensationalism and to provoke thoughts (I'm sure it has been mentioned at least a few times in these replies below). Here's something to think about, if one were to reduce all this said 'sensationalism', wouldn't this game be a tad less boring. Did the idea of getting this mask peak your interest to any degree? Although the real-life action/idea of doing this would be terrifying, this is what game developers will do to make the video game "better". Highly questionable motives in my opinion but nevertheless legitimate. @CAL45's comments From what I understand, since children's minds are extremely malleable esp in early development, prolonged exposure to violent video games can affect them negatively. It depends on who and such. This entire debate of how video games affect children also has the factor of nature and nurture. I think this would provide a small look at it for those who are interested. This deals primarily with aggression in children with exposure to video games. http://www.soc.iastate.edu/sapp/VideoGames1.pdf
