Linoleum Knive
Mixtape mecca and openair piracy expo Megaupload has a serious problem: it's just been shut down by the feds. The feds. And they didn't even need SOPA! The federal indictment accuses Megauploadâ€â€which shocked the internet with the revelation that rap producer Swizz Beatz is for some reason its CEOâ€â€of over $500 million in lost media revenue from hosting pirated media. It was quite a run, though! Megaupload boasted "more than 150 million registered users, 50 million daily visitors and accounting for four percent of the total traffic on the Internet," according to the DoJ. More in the article here: http://gizmodo.com/5877612/feds-kill-megaupload Well that sucks. Personally I hate MU anyway. How do you guys feel? Also, fuck SOPA. Weeman
Now where am I going to backup my porno :-( what makes me giggle inside is the fact that the site had endorsements by those the MPAA claims to be having their copyright infringed. Oh by the way, I estimate this thread to have cost me $600,000,000. SURE DO LOVE THE WORD ESTIMATE.

UrShulgi
The really shitty part about the whole thing isn't that MegaUpload is getting sued...it's that MegaUpload isn't a US company, none of it's members are located in the US, they haven't come to the US, and don't host their servers in the US. But somehow despite them never being here or doing business here, they are somehow being made subject to our laws and are being arrested in foreign countries at the request of the DoJ for extradition to the US. Imagine Crazo-terro-stan (a made up country) makes some crazy law and says the US is violating it. Would the US extradite it's own citizens for breaking the law in a country they'd never gone? That's the fucking crazy part. Edit: Things to keep in perspective here, with both this and SOPA/PIPA...the US music (RIAA) industry really isn't THAT huge, they just spend a fuckload on buying congress-critters. The total US music market is only about 10 billion. As for the movie industry (MPAA) check the numbers: Total Box Office Gross (2011): $10,194,226,193. They probably made some more selling DVD's/Bluerays, but still, not a HUGE market, but it wields disproportionately large influence in politics and lawmaking. Edit 2: To further put it in perspective, Google has annual revenue of 35.76 billion...which is bigger than the entire entertainment industry. Why did Google get ignored in the SOPA/PIPA hearings but the RIAA/MPAA got their way? Edited January 20, 2012 by Ur'Shulgi

60Seconds
I have to say, after reading this article, I'm glad they were shut down. They aren't like TPB, those guys do it for the benefit of their users, they did it so they could have luxury cars and tons of money. http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/01/20/10199528-megaupload-founders-homes-raided-5m-in-luxury-cars-seized New Zealand police served 10 search warrants at several businesses and homes around the city of Auckland.Police spokesman Grant Ogilvie said the seized cars include a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe worth more than $400,000 as well as several Mercedes. Two short-barreled shotguns and a number of valuable artworks were also confiscated, he added. Pictures posted on Flickr and technology news website Gizmodo showed the haul included a 2010 Maserati and a pink Cadillac. One Mercedes had the personalized license place "MAFIA,"while another had a plated that read "CEO." Pictures of the cars they seized here http://gizmodo.com/5877807/this-is-what-megauploads-kim-schlitzs-cars-being-seized-looks-like/gallery/1 Full set of pics here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/elliottkember/sets/72157628949521545/with/6729504345/ Edited January 20, 2012 by Billy Mays
