LazaHorse
So I'm just gonna copy and paste what I posted on Tom's Hardware in case someone here already knows a solution. Long story short, since installing and moving the sound card I won last month in my computer, it hangs on shut down until I hard shut down by holding the power button. Please help!!!:homer: I recently received a new sound card from a gaming community I'm a member of. There was a drawing for donators and I got lucky, winning a Creative Sound Blaster Recon 3D Fatal1ty. Initially I had problems with it where the sound would cut off and leave me with incessant buzzing. I ended up deciding to move the video card I have (SAPPHIRE Radeon 6870 1GB) to a different slot and also moving the sound card to a different PCI-E slot. However, while the computer runs fine (for now) without any noticeable sound or graphical error, it instead hangs during shut down. I reach the "Shutting Down..." screen with the spinning wheel, and it stays there indefinitely. I can hard shut it down with the power button, and it doesn't give me a "Windows did not shut down properly" error when I re-boot. Also, there is no "Shutting down slowly" option in the control panel like I would expect. In other words, it is shutting down as far as my computer can tell, but it simply doesn't turn off. Is there a way to fix this that is already known? My specs are below: OS: Windows 7 64-bit Home Edition Mobo: Gigabyte Z68X CPU: Intel i5-2500k RAM: 8GB Corsair VGU: SAPPHIRE Radeon 6870 1GB Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Recon 3D Fatal1ty PSU: Coolermaster 800W HDD: 1TB Western Digital Periph: Steelseries Merc Stealth Keyboard, Razer Deathadder Mouse, Razer Carcharias
enigma#
lol do you have Service Pack 1 installed? Second question, have you installed any new software lately? And one more question, did you try taking out the sound card and seeing if the issue persists?
BranHorse
Like i told you before...take the sound card out. Then try shutting down. If it still hangs then unplug all the usb and try again. If none of that works then its the board most likely. My old asus would hang like that whenever i had anything in the usb 3.
Scott
My sound card does that buzzing thing so I just use my USB. Also, my computer does that shut down thing too. I'd like to see a solution D:

Not sure, nothing between when it was shutting down fine and started hanging, and will try this when I get home. Like i told you before...take the sound card out. Then try shutting down. If it still hangs then unplug all the usb and try again. If none of that works then its the board most likely. My old asus would hang like that whenever i had anything in the usb 3.0 I ignore anything you say that doesn't involve our girlfriend. But I will be trying that when I get home. It's ONLY BEEN OCCURRING since moving the two cards around, so I'm sure it's one of those two things being stupid. If it DOES work when I take the sound card out, what do? It was working fine before (shutting down-wise) but it was giving me a buzzing sound there. I don't think the card is faulty, but something between the card, that PCI-E slot, and my mobo seems to be causing this hang. My sound card does that buzzing thing so I just use my USB. Also, my computer does that shut down thing too. I'd like to see a solution D: STOP HIJACKING MY THREAD SOMALIAN PIRATE!

LazaHorse
Well....did you yell at it? Even better, I pee'd on it. It squealed for a bit, but then I guess it got exhausted cuz it turned off its lights and went to sleep.
LazaHorse
In other relevant news... Is there a reason why my Keyboard (SS Merc Stealth) doesn't "turn off" when the computer does? The LEDs that light the keys stay on after shut down and the numlock signal LED turns on. I had a problem earlier where the computer wouldn't shutdown because of the ZBoard software that is meant to be installed with the keyboard. I uninstalled that and my problems seemed to be fixed until now. Still, the whole keyboard never turning off thing seems strange.
LazaHorse
Check your printer cables. What do you mean by that? My printer is connected by USB. Saying that could be an issue? Actually... there's a second cable that connects the original printer cable to the computer because the original isn't long enough. Could trying to pass the signal between two USB cables be the issue? I had a problem like that earlier with a Wi-Fi adapter that I had connected with two USB cables in a line. AnonyHorse
never though lazarus could be trolled...the apocalypse is near! on topic: Even if you shut down your PC if the power supply is switched on it still powers peripherals. I charge my phone with the computer off sometimes. I imagine its just powering the leds in the keyboard the same way.

enigma#
Actually if you don't unplug your computer completely, it still drains power http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standby_power Most computers that are up to date (ACPI) will allow certain components to run. LAN is usually active (WOL for instance)
LazaHorse
Bumping with a list of tried and failed "solutions:" Disconnecting the sound card - Still hung during shutdown. Booting in Safe Mode - Still hanging. Defragmenting - Only 3% fragmentation, still hung. Clearing out unused or suspicious software - Nothing. enigma#
Check event viewer (start -> run -> eventvwr.msc) around the time of the shutdown and your boot up we may find some interesting things >.<
LazaHorse
Yeah I saw errors from the boot up and shut down earlier but couldn't make anything of what was there. I'm sure you'd be better at that than me. enigma#
All From: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/windows-7-is-very-slow-to-shutdown/fb35a679-c9b8-4a97-95c4-39c60e218130 { What you want to do is go to the registry and change a couple values. Open the registry and locate the key{ \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management}, then change the value of ClearPageFile at Shutdown to a 0 IF the value is 1. If the value is 1, it will take longer for your computer to shutdown..this fix cured it all for me. } This might help ya out! Based on this value: ShutdownSystemSessionsTime 8040 I suspect something is hanging up your computer, try playing around with msconfig Strictly speaking this stuff: Performing a Clean Boot: Click Start Orb > type msconfig in the searchbox Click msconfig in the search results Click the General tab, and click Selective Startup Under Selective Startup uncheck Load Startup items Click the Services tab, check the Hide all Microsoft Services box, and then click Disable All Click OK, and when you are prompted, click Restart. As well, look in the StartUp tab, disable everythingreboot and try it again

enigma#
I would suggest doing a system restore to a point where it didn't do it
LazaHorse
I will be trying that after a few more tweaks. I opened up the BIOS and in the "MB Intelligent Tweaker" I got this message in a red box in front of the Bios GUI: The system has experienced boot failures because of overclocking or changes of voltages. Last settings in this page may not coincide with current H/W states. Press any key to continue..." Relevant?
LazaHorse
I'm restoring right now to the 30th (just before installing the sound card). Turn off the Intel Turbo Boost and manually clocking the CPU and memory didn't work. Clean Boot again didn't work. Disabled/uninstalled a multitude of "new" software programs. Nothing... Hoping the system restore fixes it. Amos and I were talking and he brought up the fact that I did recently install the F11 bios to the motherboard, I think around the same time that I installed the sound card. However, I haven't read anything from searching online about the new bios causing any power on/off issues.
enigma#
it's unlikely but possible, ACPI issues could be foobaring your computer did you install the ACPI/mobo drivers of your manufacturer's website?
LazaHorse
Yeah the F11 driver I installed was right from their website. After the system restore, the shut down hung again the first time. That restart installed many of the drivers for the video card and such, and I'm now running the shut down again... and... it seems to be hanging. enigma#
Reset your BIOS defaults and see how it behaves
LazaHorse
I just tried after resetting it to both "Fail-Safe" and "Optimized" Defaults... nothing. I've put in a ticket with Gigabyte to see if it's the F11 and what they think I should do about it.
