The fact that it branched out toward older men is an exception to the rule, one that doesn't happen often. Only other cartoons that I can think of that have a significant adult following despite their intended audience are Ren & Stimpy and Spongebob Squarepants. The former branched out after the writer retooled it toward an older audience (crude humor and gross visuals). The latter branched out from irony... adults tried to swag up this gay sponge who had gay buttsex with a starfish. Anime is really no different. Most animes are geared toward a younger audience though some branch out because of content/visuals toward an older (teenage-young adult) sector. This is the only anime I could find that comes close to Death Note, Code Geass, and One Outs in terms of having a genius main character.
