The Court of Cassation, Italy's Supreme Court, should this week confirm or deny the lower courts' sentence on the former prime minister of four years in prison and five years of exclusion from public life. The court's name derives from the French "casser", to break: it can "break" the judgments of the lower courts, but none can break its own.
