A man after my own heart.

Dev - The trick with leaving your backups on an external drive is that once your drive craps out, you have a single (and probably at least a little outdated) point of failure before you have complete loss. External drives also tend to be more fault prone because they're portable and have a tendency to get bumped, so you have to be careful with them.

For paranoia's sake (might as well be the rule of thumb in IT) backing up to two locations, like a RAID and an external source (external drive or optical media) allows you to still have an additional point of failure before complete loss, AND it's still up to date since you're mirroring.

Of course, if your house burns down, your house burns down, but short of that, you're sitting fairly well.

I should actually clarify that...one RAID is for porn.

Jesus christ guys, stop flaming. Billy, John, you have your own opinions on different companies and hardware brands. Please don't come into a thread asking for ideas and start flaming. It gets annoying and is a waste of space. Terry, Monkey, Wingless, and everyone else who's posted good posts, thank you for the posts and the suggestions. I will look them all over and decide which parts I like best.

Also, don't rule out a SSD for your hard drive. They're getting cheaper every month, and if you can wait till January or so they will probably drop in price (Jan-March is usually when computer parts start to drop in price substantially). Just get a SSD for your OS/drivers and get a cheap Seagate for your storage.

They say that SSD's now will last 10+ years, and since there are no moving parts, the chance of it breaking is slim to none (unless you are a giant fuckup, like John).

I already have the harddrives that I need. Just going to take the one's out of my current computer and put them into the new one. That's 2.5Tb of internal space and 1Tb of external. So I'm not worried about harddrives. Just everything else. John, I like the fact that your giving facts. I just asked you to not come in and start flaming people.

I've been rebuilding computers since I was 8 so I may be able to help you on this...what's your lifestyle? Pure gamer? College gamer? Pen pusher? Graphic designer?

A computer is best when it meets your own needs.

Crosshair, your a bit late on the subject man lol. I've already got the parts picked out. I know what i'm doing lol. Spent a lot of my high school education learning about how to put computers together to make them work.

It's not just about building them..it's troubleshooting!

My sexy rig that I have now, costed me close to $3500, as soon as I put it together (yes, with every precaution) the PSU went and fried the board. Took about 3 months to get everything RMA'd and working. Then my boot sector screwed up which caused me another couple days of pain.

Just make sure you get parts from companies that have VERY good customer service.

Remember, it's not just your education in building them, it's the knowledge of troubleshooting. About 75% brand new custom computers built will fail at the get-go.

Good luck!

:rock2:

(Newegg)

I dunno, I've never managed to misconfigure a system before. It's mostly A+ stuff and basic knowledge of electrical circuitry.

Don't forget your board spacers next time.

Board spacers were there.

But like I said Kiri, sometimes parts just arrive DOA. That's why it's always better to expect it to not turn on rather than getting your hopes up for the first boot =P
