Maybe the aliens that, according to some, visited the Mayans told them that's the day they would return to Earth. To be honest I feel we have no proof to ultimately classify it as doomsday or not. It's all astronomical. Even in the bible, it talks about the end of the world. However, it's not exactly like that. "As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world." However, the problem is with the translation of the Greek word "Aion".
