Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (shit brix when you read this)

Now five years after releasing their mind blowing hit Oblivion, Bethesda Studios is back with another. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is set to release this November (11.11.11) and I for one can't wait. After going afk when comes to Elder Scrolls, Bethesda has finally decided to make a new "realer than life" game for the series. Oblivion brought a whole new aspect of imersive role playing to video game world, but after getting the "detes" on Skyrim, Oblivion falls right in line with the less succesful Fallout series.

The whole imersive aspect of Oblivion is brought to a whole nother planet with Skyrim. Tomm Howard, Bethesda Studios creative director, discusses the tech behind Skyrim. Yeah i said tech. Howard firsts talks about the graphics but more specifically the draw distance in the new title.

"The big things for us were to draw a lot of stuff in the distance so we have a really sophisticated level of detail, more so than what we've had in the past for how things stream in and how detail gets added to them as they get closer to the camera."

Lighting also presents itself as a key component:

"Because our worlds are so big all of the lighting has to be dynamic, that's something we had a little bit of in the past with shadowing, but not on everything. Now we have it on everything. It just makes the whole thing a lot more believable when you're there."

Howard also addresses the importance of foliage and weather, both of which are huge components when really trying to pull the player into the game. Leaving graphics asside, Howard then mentions a whole new AI that is to be brought to the game.

"The improved Radiant AI technology is also more aware of how a citizen should react to your actions. As you perform tasks for them or terrorize them by ransacking their home, the NPCs develop feelings about you. If you're good friends with a particular NPC and barge into his house during the middle of the night, he may offer you lodging rather than demand you leave the premises."

Character animations, when looking back on it now, was a huge mess in Oblivion. To call the animations awkward is being nice. They were bad. So, why not fix them? Howard claims Bethesda is working on a whole new set of animations, something only comparable to that of real life.

"The increased animation fidelity and diversity has enabled Bethesda to ditch the awkward dialogue camera perspective that paused the game and presented you with an extreme closeup of the person with whom you were speaking. Now camera stays in the same perspective used during combat and exploration, and players are free to look around while engaging in conversation. Rather than drop their activities to give you their undivided attention, the NPCs continue to go about their business while in discussion. For instance, a barkeep may continue to clean cups while talking, and even move from behind the counter to a seat. A mill worker chopping wood may engage in conversation without turning away from his duties, only occasionally glancing toward you during the exchange."

Wait... there are dragons too?

"Bethesda has worked meticulously to make sure the beasts look powerful and menacing when banking, flapping their wings, gaining altitude before making another strafing run, and breathing fire on their hapless victims. None of the dragons' actions are scripted, and Behavior helps make the movements look non-mechanical, even when the dragons are speaking/shouting."

The last aspect is questing. Each improvement Bethesda is making takes a HUGE step towards making the game more fluid and flawless.

"Traditionally in an assassination quest, we would pick someone of interest and have you assassinate them. Now there is a template for an assassination mission and the game can conditionalize all the roles - where it happens, under what conditions does it take place, who wants someone assassinated, and who they want assassinated. All this can be generated based on where the character is, who he's met. They can conditionalize that someone who you've done a quest for before wants someone assassinated, and the target could be someone with whom you've spent a lot of time before."

Its obvious that Skyrim is going to set the bar for future role playing games, and I for one can't wait for this year to go by. Bethesda sucked me into the gaming world with Oblivion, now I just hope that Skyrim doesn't pull me away from reality.

Now for a teaser:

True but, Darkfall doesnt go as in depth as the Elder Scrolls series does. Oblivion on the computer can be transformed however you please while Darkfall has a preset world and preset gameplay. I dont know bro, there different games with different styles of gameplay. There not too easy to compare.

Woot! Another good graphics engine that tries to mask the fact that the actual game is boring and tedious.

Just what I always wanted.

Woot! Your retarded because you've bviously overlooked that fact that Oblivion is one of the most in-depth and complex RPG's still on the market today... especially with modding. The only thing that may be tedious is the repetative main quest line where your constantly trying to close Oblivion gates. Nothing about Oblivion was boring, you can do whatever you want, especially if you learn the complex world of TES modding. If you havn't been able to tell, I'm religously attched to the Elder Scrolls series.

Yes.... I LOVE Oblivion. And Fallout 3. Played about 80 hours of each game. And both were on 360, not PC. With PC - Thousands of Mods - Endless gameplay. Never had a chance to play Morrowind, but heard it was better than Oblivion. And Fallout Vegas was good but lot of it the same as part 3.

And knowing that Skyrim will most likely have a construction set/mods like Bethsoft's other games.... Think about the endless possibilities!!!

By the way, I live in Maryland. Bethesda made Morrowind/Oblivion/Fallout 3.... Bethesda is in Maryland. 2 and 2 = REPRESENT MD!

Skyrim > Mass Effect 3 > EVERY THANG!
