For the original HTC Evo (June 2010) I got to the Sprint store at 3:30AM, I was fourth in line. Granted, the iPhone is a much bigger deal. I would honestly try to drive to where you're buying it now and check out if there's a line yet, I'll guess that there is, depending if you're in a big city or not. If there's no one there yet, 3AM shouldn't be too crazy. If there's a few people waiting already just know that those are the craziest people, whereas the less crazy people will still show up, just they all have the same idea of getting there as early as possible to miss out on a huge line.
