Since then the meta has changed, and Skarner himself has received a hefty nerf. One HUGE difference is that Skarner no longer can start with regrowth because he's expected to gank pre-6, and gank often. So he starts with boots. Now how does this relate to mana. For one, Skarner cannot simply leave off shield to clear jungle because he doesnt have HP5 to regen the health. For two, Skarner cannot build a Philo stone as early (800 gold as opposed to 365 from Philo), and is therefore without the mana regen philo offers for a while. Finally and perhaps most importantly, that video is pre-patch Skarner. The mana cost on his Q has been increased since then from 15 to as high as 28 at level 5. Skarner is very mana thirsty early game in his jungle clear, and an early glacial shroud helps with that as well as providing CDR. My usual build with Skarner is (to compensate for that mana problem) Boots, Philo, HoG, Glacial. Straight up. Fuck Sheen, Fuck Merc Treads, and Fuck Shurelyas. 450 mana, 45 armor, and 15% CDR are all WAY too good on him to not get IMMEDIATELY after GP10s. I would play beast with him on twisted treeline.....when i would use my retarded builds for him.... not knowing hes a tank..and get yelled at by my teammates o_o...
