Rap

I live in a part of America where people either listen to country, pop, or reggaeton. So I never really get to talk to anyone about good rap. I hear a lot of "YMCMB" and "TGOD" shit and I get really tired of it.

So I'm wondering what kind of rap HG listens to. And I wanna get some suggestions. And some good discussions.

I'm really into MF Doom, especially the Madvillainy album, Tech N9ne, and J Dilla. I really think they all have the perfect mix of a great beat and great lyrics.

My favorite song at the moment:

Flobots, look up Johnny5, he writes the lyrics/raps and his flow/metaphors/lyrics are better than anyone I've ever heard. I listened to the album by him and yak Onomatopoeia so many times and I'm still finding new shit in the lyrics.

I really liked Eminem pre-rehab. I feel like his rapping got too serious after that. But his rapping when he was with D12 and in his Encore and the Eminem Show is really good and I still listen to it.

I feel the same way about Doom. He manages to make the best raps, even without a hook.

And I always just go on rapgenius. They usually have really explanations of lyrics for rap songs.

I don't really see Flobots as rap. And I can't get into Jonny 5. I just don't feel the flow of it.

I seem to be one of a small population who like MF Doom. But I can't understand why. He has amazing flow and crazy good lyrics with a lot of meaning.

Macklemore is pretty good and he's got good flow and everything but I just don't feel it. I just can't get into it. It's like listening to Kid Sister or 'Lil Kim or M.I.A. They all fall into this stereotype where, as female singers, they feel like they have to rap aggressively and be angry about everything. That's why I like Rah Digga and Jean Grae because they break the mold. But Macklemore falls into a style that I feel like he shares with all the other white rappers like Eminem and Mac Miller and it just pushes me away. But maybe that's just me.

Macklemore is to corny. Same shit different song.

But man, as many in hg can tell you, i am a rap fanatic haha. You know who j dilla is.....your awesome haha

Ill post some of my favorites.

All time favorite mc is Andre 3000. Like slick rick this man perfected story rap. Outkast made the best albums of all time and not many people seem to realize it. They only think about hey yeah and roses.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW3h3tk3iME

Second best to me (WUTANG) Raekwon>ODB>Gostface>RZA (production)

Raekwon is making a come back, one of the best. ODB could freestyle drunk as fuck r.i.p

3rd is Talib kweli (Mos Def may be here to tho)

The soul soldier. Great poet.

Ok heres just some of my favorite songs. To me Kanye and common can share the #4 spot, but they are inconsistent. (pac and biggie go 4 also just dont want to put either of them lower then 4 haha)

Kanyes best song all the feels

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTovzKyOEM8

This song nearly saved my life. There was a point in my life where i was in pain and just didn't want to deal with anything anymore. I heard this song and it made me feel all good. Poetry at its finest. This may be my favorite song of all time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_-qRcHAhzk&lc=1YHihWo3hYWJKf57nrcS6cQ95QYfaCA6ssz4T2RRrFI

EVERY OUTKAST SONG EVER (to many to link babylon posted above is my all time favorite.)

You already covered MF doom haha XD

I have issues with Tech n9ne. Seems to not have meaning. He does have amazing skills though.

ODB was the shit. I wish he never went to jail for bullshit and then OD as soon as he got out..

Busta rhymes USED to be one of the illest mc ever but unfortunatly he sold the fuck out. Signed to YMCB (go from the WU to young money?) and then make absolute shit...cmon

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1Fx16_QPno

RZA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5chO4D4oGsE

-------------------------------------------------------------------

New shit. This stuff is all about new artist that i currently listen to the most and think will be on ^^^^^^^ in the future

(I'm studying and this thread is giving me the best reason to procrastinate ever)

My favorite rapper out right now

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nitz50WxwOY

Ab-soul. This guy is smart as fuck. Sometimes i have to open up a dictionary when i listen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_71q5lVEjc ---sick as fuck (i'll talk about danny brown in a min)

Next is k-dot. Best lyricist since well...maybe ever. Talks about real shit and can have fun.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh6QxtRpSH8

Now danny motherfuckin brown. Coolest person NA. Funny as shit goes hard and truly doesn't give a fuck. No one DGAFs harder then danny

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m44nnb8F80

(not really a new guy) Pusha T

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Evs0wwnuak killed all of ymcmb in one song

Haha dillagence is one of my favorite collab albums so yea I really like J Dilla.

And I totally agree with you. Outkast is so under-rated. Church is one of the funkiest rap songs ever and hardly anyone has heard of it. However, I do think Big Boi raps much more fiercely than andre. Just my opinion though

Raekwon>ODB>Gostface>RZA

I'd rank it more like RZA > Method Man > ODB > Raekwon. RZA has done some great songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRRen4nuVkg

I've never really gotten into Common but for the longest time, Kanye was my favorite rapper. Late Registration is still one of the best albums as far as beats goes. And Graduation and College Dropout are really solid too. But MBDTF and onwards has really not been good in my opinion. His rapping has gone downhill a lot I think and although he had a few good songs since then, it's just not up to par with his earlier stuff.

As far as tech n9ne, listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66D2Ruy0a-0

His stuff is really hit or miss. Either its really good or really bad. But he really is on a strange level thats far out haha.

I think Busta has a lot of great raps and I think he's been going hard since he started out on Scenario. But since the mid 2000s his shit has really gone downhill.

I've never heard of Ab-Soul but thats some good shit. That's my kind of rap. Really solid and the beats complement the lyrics.

And as for Kendrick Lamar, I've been slowly liking him more and more. I couldn't stand him at the start but I have a friend who is obsessed with him and he's been showing me his better stuff.

And Danny Brown is good for the same reason Busta is good, he's wild.

But I just don't really like Pusha T. I can't really explain why but it's just not something I can feel.

You got some good taste Bran haha. Good to know there are other rap buffs in HG haha.

Also, because I am totally obsessed with MF Doom and how good his beats are:

Doom was truly ahead of his time.

Why don't you like pusha? Probably all the crack references haha. He does it a little to much.

I don't really think Kanye lost it per say.(has had some terrible songs though) I believe he changed his rap to what his life currently is. He cant talk about college and family issues forever so when MBDTF came out he was going threw relationship issues (and loss of his mother) so he mad a story album about both things (manly his mom) if you watch the whole runaway film you can start to correlate the video to his life. I thought it was a great story.

Same thing can be said about jay-z. Can't rap about hood shit for too long. I really love kanye for his production.

Cruel summer was sick as fuck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC-1AaTonTs

Should have mentioned CyiHi da prince too. (i tried but i reached the maximum of media links you can put in a post)

Adding one more group you should listen to (if you like tech you'll love this haha)

Yea but Kanye has done a lot of things that have made me go "what the fuck?"

All of the lights has 14 people singing on it besides Kanye. Seriously, who does that? It's a little crazy and overdone.

I don't really like the Flatbush Zombies songs you put mainly cause I on't really like when rappers just talk about drugs and that's all. Or when drugs are the focal point.

And A$AP Mob is a joke aside from Rocky. It's like YMCMB where out of the 15 artists in it, there's 3 ones with any skill at all.

If rocky didn't have great production value then i wouldn't listen haha. A$AP ant is one of the worst rappers ive ever heard haha

I personally enjoy weed (or drugged out rap) as long as thats the kinda lifestyle they actually live.

Contrary to some YMCMB rappers who say they do all these things (rick ross drake wayne(wayne used to)etc) but in all reality they never have and never will.

Danny brown can talk about fucking on bitches and spitting on them while taking adderal because he does it haha.

Zombies are no different, but i can definitely see where you are coming from.

in the words of the greatest trap artist ever "you aint bout that life"

I like Rick Ross because he made a big shit about him bein a heavy dealer and druggie and everything and he's actually a cop. So for that reason I think he's pretty funny.

But as far as Drake goes, I just can't enjoy his music. Saying he's a rapper is like saying light roast is coffee. Drake is rap for people who don't like rap and that's about it.

Eh that's just a little too heavy for me. I can't really get into that. Joey's verse is better than ab-soul's in my opinion but it's just not something I can get into.

A whole branch off of rap that I love is mash-ups. Not shit remixes but ones that incroporate the rap into new beats that make it so much more listenable.

Just some of the best ones in my opinion. I really love mash-ups and they've exposed me to a lot of rappers and made me like rap a lot more.

This songs not for everyone but im mad at myself for sleeping on this guy.

Chance has a ODB feel to him (not what they rap about) he can use his voice to mend a song together and even go beatless.

His voice and lyrics are amazing and the simplistic beats make the shit amazing. His tape came out yesterday and I loved everything. So different

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21wU6-xd0BU

Gambino collab. I can see this song being on the radio and i wouldnt care. This song deserve to be played.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjmiLp47Yg8

BEST INTRO I HAVE EVER HEARD. Piano is so calming.

Also an ab-soul colab on the tape but chance actually out lyrics soul....very hard to do

Also he put this tape out for free. I would have paid

You're definitely right that it's not for everyone but it's pretty original so I think it's pretty cool. I find his voice really annoying though so I don't think I could get into him. But I do respect his originality and the lyrics are pretty chill.

As for that new indicud album, I'm a little dissapointed. One or two songs are great, about half the songs are alright and the rest are shit. Pretty dissapointed in Kid Cudi with that but that's just me.

I think one of the best new rappers is gonna be captain murphy, who is flying lotus's rapper alter ego. I think once he starts releasing more, he's gonna become a new quasimoto and mf doom but with sorta of a tyler the creator style that just makes his music amazing.

He's released one mixtape called duality and there's only one song on the whole album I don't like. Flow is fantastic, lyrics are deep, and the beats are simply amazing.

Really amazing stuff and I can't wait for more from him.
