ASCII
Most local colleges and universities have programming classes, The Art Institute of Philidephia was my first choice for college back in 1996, they had an awesome game design and coding class. I never made it to that university, but what I am trying to state is that formal training is the best route. We have some awesome coders here in HG, and I garentee you they spent moolah to get their knowledge.
Papa John
Most Triple A titles are often derived from, on a basic level, knowledge of C++ and usually DirectX (Renders what the game looks like). However other titles, usually made by smaller studios, use a multitude of various other languages to create their games. For example, Java, as you pointed out, was used to make the highly successful indie title Minecraft. The trade off being they choose to be able to release on all three platforms (PC/MAC/Linux) over arguably better performances given by a language for just one platform. If your really interested in learning, it is very possible to teach yourself so long as your committed to seeing it through. There is plenty of documentation and YouTube tutorials for just about any computer language you want to learn. To start I would say you could learn easier in one of the higher level languages (C-Sharp or Visual Basic Framework) but you will have to slowly progress down to C/C++. Or you can start from the ground floor at C, and while it will be a grind, you will find the higher level languages come more naturally. The key to everything is commitment, you will never stop learning something new about any particular language. If you put in the time, later on down the line you will be able to make your own games.
