Planning on buying 4 gb of ram, and either a new CPU or a GPU depending on which one you think i should rather upgrade

AMD Phenom 955 x4 3.2 ghz

4 gb ddr 3 ram soon to be 8

windows 8 64 bit

corsair 750 w psu

500 sata harddrive

evga geforce gtx 280 sc edition

M4A88T-V motherboard

budget 200-400 dollars doesnt matter if Nvidia or ATI for Graphic card, but has to be a AMD CPU since i dont want to change my motherboard.

You cannot just upgrade your cpu without getting a new board. New amd chips are all am3+ sockets (yours is am3). Some boards (am3) can support am3+ fx cpu's but yours cannot. You could throw a 1090t or 1100t in it but there isnt really a performance gain there. I have owned both a 955 and 1090t hex and the 955 is a better chip.

If I were you I would grab either a gtx 760 or amd r9 270 or 280 and save more cash for a new mobo/cpu later down the road. The 955 is one of my favorite chips of all times (when you get rid of it pm me i'll take it off your hands) so it will handle the gpu's i listed above, but you will get a bottleneck which will lower your fps until the new cpu/mobo gets added. But you will still see a noticeable fps increase.
