IM A SURVIVOR

Good that you're safe! Having no power sucks huh? When Rita hit, ours was out for 15 days! Combined with the fact it was damn impossible to get gas, those were some damn lonely, depressing 15 days.

The first few days are alright: you clean all the shit out of your yard/street area and see if any of the people around the community need help with their mess and damage. But once those first few days pass, everything comfortable starts to disappear: keeping the fridge shut is no longer going to save the food you had, the gas stations all run out of gas, your cell phone and other electronic devices start running out of power, etc.. You start reading books, but the air is too stiff and hot inside, and it's too humid and hot outside to concentrate. It's too hot to sleep, so you don't even have that to look forward to. So you're left with not much else to do but wait for a sense of normalcy to return because the most important things are out of your hands. I can only imagine what the people with severe property damage and those who lose everything, fully insured or not, go through things 100x worse than what I described.

Hopefully such a large group of people experiencing that(even to such a lesser extent) will remind these damn Congressmen hinting at wanting to cut disaster relief funding after the Joplin tornadoes why it's important that the government steps in and helps in such times of need.

All you people saying, "I survived Irene" or w-e, big deal. Come re-live Hurricane Katrina and then say you survived. No power for over a month, no groceries for 3 weeks, no gas for a month. We were fucked in the ass. And on top of that, New Orleans was completely destroyed and was flooded for a month.

It just sickens me the way the easterners are acting over a Cat 1 hurricane.

P.S. Month after Katrina, we got hit by Rita. Double trouble and we are still here.
