acj2001 Posted August 31, 2017 Share Posted August 31, 2017 (edited) Custom beacon messages probably sounded great in theory, but now I feel like the message beacon as a whole has lost its meaning. Beacons have basically turned into bad graffiti now. People draw dicks, insult others, push usually-toxic memes, and give shoutouts to people who aren't ZS.Dylan. I don't see many legitimate helpful message beacons anymore outside of rendezvous points, or I at least don't pay attention to them among all of the graffiti beacons. I'm sure anyone who remembers a particular thread would find this suggestion very ironic. Although custom beacon messages might've been inevitable without my thread, I believe we should remove custom beacon messages and either go back to the way things were or add some of the beacon messages I suggested back then (see that particular thread) in order to restore the original point of the message beacon and remove all of the distracting graffiti. Some use it to advertise, or porn, and more stupid stuff that shouldn't be even possible. The custom message is now rendered useless in my opinion. Kind of surprised that this wasn't brought up sooner. Boom no more beacon and boom free beacon for me. I remember cause I msged adam saying thx (cause u know adam and I are homies jk jk) and he was like yw so yeah u can.... Rulebreaking messages aren't my point here. The original purpose of the message beacon is to relay important messages to humans, and the consequences of custom messages have ruined or at least obscured that. iProbie Posted August 31, 2017 Share Posted August 31, 2017 I have never seen anyone use the beacon for racism/hate speech (anecdote, I know). so unless you guys are experiencing repeat cases of people using the beacons to bypass a gag or for racist remarks/hate spreading, I don't see any problem with it. for everything else, the default select of messages are clear enough for gameplay purposes (things like Meet up here, beware of poison, danger). the custom text is literally only for memes. and usually you can say something in chat if you want to warn things like chrono or headcrabs. I don't see any useful beacons anymore aside from rendezvous points ("Meet up here" beacons), or I at least don't notice them among all of the memes. I used to see them a lot more before custom messages came along. and usually you can say something in chat if you want to warn things like chrono or headcrabs. A lot of people don't read the chat in intense situations and sometimes there's not enough time to do so. A lot of people don't have mics to scream it into either.
