The motd says no forms of implied racism/racism. If the N-word has been/is still used as a highly offensive term to describe a person. Why did u think subtracting a N and replacing it with a W would make it any better or acceptable.

 

Sometimes if people would just think about their actions before they said foolish things or made threads that make them look foolish the world would be a much simpler place

If I see anyone using specific names that could potentially hurt someone else like this they will get a ban from me after they are warned and kicked.... against the rules or not. I agree with the HG racism policy, however, in today's world I think calling someone a fag or anything like that is JUST AS UNACCEPTABLE. I see people constantly calling people fag and pussy and all kinds of derogatory words. I hate to sound like an old man but if they get pissed off to the point where they use words like that they probably aren't contributing to the "fun" aspect of the server anyways.

Haha. ^ You aren't understanding... Rules are rules. They aren't going to change. They have been like this for god knows how long and they aren't GOING to change. Terms such as "bitch", "fag", "prick", etc. are derogatory words. They are not "racist" terms. The "n" word or ANY word derived from the "n" word are words that are a put-down to a certain race. Any racial slur is a put-down to a certain group of people and our community does not put up with the use of any racial slurs on our forums. Doesn't matter the context, that's that.

 

I didn't claim that those terms were racist, nor did I ever ask why that word (something I would never say or defend derogatory usage of) was banned. But thanks for playing!

 

Also, trash talk is not ENCOURAGED. Yes, it is ALLOWED, but there is a difference.

 

Also: Wig*er is a term derived from the literal definition "n" word, an ignorant individual, but has taken a urban slang twist for someone of Caucasian descent which would mean it is technically a racial slur, meaning it's not allowed in HG.

 

Are you really saying that the literal definition of the n word is "an ignorant individual"? That is one of the most laughable/racist retorts in this thread, congrats. And by that logic ("urban slang twist for someone of Caucasion descent") the word "cracker" should be a bannable offense. See how ridiculous that seems?

 

This entire thread could've been avoided. Any form of racism, whether implying or blatant, is unacceptable.

First off, I'm not raging by any means. I thought the ban was hilarious. That being said, this server is something I sink a good deal of my free time into and I (and others) noticed that there was a double standard regarding accepted hate speech, so I made a thread about it in a attempt to discuss it in thoughtful terms. I guess I should've figured the replies would consist of circlejerking nonsense (its da rules cause its da rules!) and memes. I may not have an active presence on these forums but I've put in my time on the actual server, funny how few of these names I'm recognizing. I love the server and this post is my way of trying to improve the culture, or at least to have its members take a critical look at their behavior.

 

I'm going to tell you the same thing I tell everyone else who thinks "Oh why is the N word ban? Its not racist."

We make the rules

You follow the rules or you don't play

 

Again, never asked why the word was banned. See, I'm really starting to think that you guys just saw a few words/read the title and decided to weigh in as opposed to really taking the time to understand the points I'm making.

I am from the Caribbean, from a very traditional family and culture of respect and honor. I would never use a derogatory term towards anyone I have respect or love for. You would be one of those fools that would be easily convinced that eating dead babies will give you magical powers becuase you saw it on a BET/MTV/MusicBox video. Wake up, and cultivate some dignity for your self, stop being ignorant.

 

 

ASCII I think you're a hoot on the server, but this post is a joke. I've noticed that you're one of the worst and loudest offenders when it comes to hate speech on the server. Or are gays not a group you respect? And I'm not sure I even understand the dead baby joke, is that a veiled stem cell reference or something? cause I'm all for stem cells!

I will say though, I think there is room for discussion on how the community handles hate speech in it's gaming environment. Is calling someone a fa**** much different than calling someone the n-bomb?

 

 

I appreciate the thought here sirius, you seem to be the only one who took the time to understand the point of this thread.

 

The reason "racist" terms are not allowed regardless of the context it is because if we did allow it in a non derogatory way then we wouldn't always be able to distinguish whether someone meant it to be offensive or if they were just joking.

 

Also, i hope you weren't just banned on the spot and were atleast muted/kicked.

 

I was kicked once, returned and apologized for saying it (while explicitly citing the word "wigger" (a possible oversight on my part)) and was banned. C'est la vie.

Scooter, you need to realize if you haven't that the rules have been this way for many years and we have no intention of changing them. We run the servers and make the rules, and players need to abide them even if they disagree.

Loving the snarky replies, anyone want to direct me to a thread that addresses similar points? I used the search function to little avail. Here they are in bullet-point for those who seem to be unable to derive information from blocks of text:

 

- the word "wigger" and whether its use should be a bannable offense

- why the "n word" is disallowed but "fa****" is encouraged as "Trash Talk"

- how/why the use of the "n word" in songs by black artists is considered racist (I was able to find some conversation on this)

 

Ill answer this for you.

1) Wigger is not allowed since its Pejorative term for a white person, also since it is a slang phrase for a highly degratory/racist phrase it is not allowed since the motd states no implied racism/racism and thus not allowed, no matter what the manner the word was used in.

 

2) fa**** is not encouraged as trash talk, We do not encourage trash talk. Being a total douche will get you banned, as with everything it is up to the descrition of the paid admin whether they choose to act on it or not, but if a member of leadership feels that it is overboard or crossing the line then they will act accordingly. As always if you feel someone is being too rude post a report on https://hellsgamers.com/hgbans.php.

 

3)Im guessing your third point was why it is not considered racist by black artist. (By no means does my opinion represent the thoughts or feelings of HG on this topic but its just my opinion.) The fact of the matter is that the word is still highly offensive and racially driven (I.e Your specifying that it is a black artist when I have heard Em, and MGK use it before.) Some words have lost their power over time. It is my opinion that certain people use this word to show how much weight it has lost. Idk why. It makes them look foolish, but to each their own.

 

As much as you want to have an open discussion about those words(and im guessing you wanted certain words to not be bannable) thats just not gonna happen anytime soon. Usually when HG makes a ruling on something Its final, and this is one of those things that has been set in stone from the start. You made the thread because you got banned for it, not because you were walking in the park and thought "let me ask HG what they think about racist terms" and since all I have seen in this thread is flame and the same points over and over. I would like to formally request this thread be closed. It has run its course

I do realize this, but I don't see anything wrong with a frank discussion regarding the legitimacy of a select few policies. Notice the respectful tone I've used throughout? For questioning why some hate speech is allowed but some isn't, it's been asserted that I'm "dumb", "ignorant", and lack "dignity". I play this server (and brought this discussion to the forums) not to "troll" but because I know there are a number of legitimately intelligent people who play and was hoping for some discourse on the matter. Instead of this, the majority of replies in this thread have been thoughtless hivemind behavior ("just don't fight it, rules are rules" etc) which is disappointing because I know that the lot of you are better than that. All that I'm asking for is some accountability.

First off, thanks for the thoughtful reply.

 

1. Fair enough, although I'm sure you'd agree that "wigger" has a mere fraction of the offensive context that the word it derives from has. The word itself has become a self-effacing joke, and it's telling that it's allowed on nationally syndicated TV.

 

2. When I prompted another member about the usage of it in this thread, he mentioned that some trash talk is allowed. Now, while there's nothing in the rules about this, think about how often you see that word in the chat feed. It's hateful speech and is just as offensive to some as the n word. Like ASCII said, we're a multi-gaming community and that means we're bound to have players who align with certain groups like those in the LGBT community or those with special needs. How then can we justify using words like "fag" or "retard" but exclude others? That is my argument.

 

3. As a fan of both of those artists I would love for you to provide an example of them using that word. And notice how I never defended the use of that word by white artists.
